Quick Answer: Energizer Ultimate Lithium AA (L91) is the best trail camera battery of 2026. Energizer’s datasheet rates it from -40°F to 140°F with a 25-year shelf life at 15 grams per cell, and in TrailCamPro’s controlled cold test it kept 97% of its room-temperature capacity at 5°F while an Energizer alkaline kept just 33%. Alkaline is fine for a summer camera you check monthly. Rechargeable NiMH is a per-camera gamble — Reconyx recommends it, SPYPOINT and Stealth Cam tell you not to — because four 1.2V cells total 4.8V, under the ~5V cutoff many cameras treat as “dead.” And the popular claim that lithium lasts five times longer is not supported by any published test: measured, it is about 1.6x at room temperature and roughly 4.6x at 5°F.
Batteries are the only part of a trail camera setup you buy over and over, and the only one that can quietly destroy the camera. A leaking alkaline cell in a $400 Reconyx is a worse outcome than any missed photo. Yet almost every buying guide in this category repeats the same unsourced multipliers, so this one does the opposite: every number below is attributed, and where the manufacturers contradict each other — which they do, loudly — we say so instead of picking the convenient side.

Trail camera batteries by the numbers
- 97% versus 33%. In TrailCamPro’s controlled cold-weather test (245mA constant load to a 0.8V endpoint), Energizer Ultimate Lithium delivered 3,430 mAh at 72°F and 3,332 mAh at 5°F — 97% retained. An Energizer AA alkaline went from 2,181 mAh to 728 mAh, retaining 33%. NiMH held up better than alkaline at 83%.
- 5.3 Wh versus 3.4 Wh versus 2.2 Wh. Winterberry Wildlife bench-measured energy per cell at 72°F with an OPUS BT-C2400 analyzer: Energizer L91 lithium 5.3 watt-hours, E91 alkaline 3.4 Wh, and NiMH just 2.2 Wh — below its own 3.0 Wh nameplate. That is the honest room-temperature picture: lithium is about 1.6x alkaline, not 5x.
- 4.8V into a 5V cutoff. TrailCamPro’s battery reference explains the mechanism that kills rechargeables in some cameras: many models cut off around 5V, and four NiMH cells at 1.2V nominal total 4.8V — under the threshold before the cells are anywhere near empty.
- 8 grams and 22 degrees. Energizer’s datasheets put the L91 lithium at 15 grams and rated to -40°C, against 23 grams and -18°C for the E91 alkaline. On an eight-cell camera that is about 64 grams saved and 22°C of extra cold tolerance, plus 25-year shelf life against 10.

There is no serious argument against lithium for a camera that will sit outside through a winter. The question is only whether you need it, and the answer comes down to two variables: temperature and flash frequency.
The temperature case is settled. TrailCamPro’s cold test is the best-designed measurement published in this space — a stated 245mA load to a stated 0.8V endpoint at two stated temperatures — and it found alkaline losing two-thirds of its capacity at 5°F while lithium lost 3%. Every battery-related failure story that starts “it was fine until the first hard freeze” is that table in narrative form.
The flash case is subtler and more interesting. Energizer’s own datasheet chart shows the lithium-versus-alkaline gap widening with current: about 1.2x at a 25mA trickle, close to 3x at 1,000mA. A trail camera idling in PIR standby is in the first regime; a trail camera firing an IR array at a deer at 2 a.m. is in the second. So a camera on a quiet field edge in July genuinely will not see much lithium benefit, and a camera on a heavily used trail shooting night video will see a large one.
What lithium is not is a five-times-longer battery. That number circulates everywhere without a test behind it, and it conflicts with the only bench measurement we could find — Winterberry Wildlife’s 5.3 Wh versus 3.4 Wh, about 1.6x. Buy lithium for cold tolerance, weight and shelf life. Those are real and documented. The blanket multiplier is not.
2. Energizer MAX or Duracell Coppertop AA — Best Budget
Premium-brand alkaline AA (Energizer MAX, Duracell Coppertop)
- Perfectly adequate above freezing — Energizer's E91 is rated to -18°C (0°F) and holds most of its capacity in mild weather.
- Approved by every manufacturer we checked, including SPYPOINT, which accepts "lithium or alkaline" but nothing rechargeable.
- Cheapest way to run a bank of budget cameras that get checked every few weeks.
- Real risk: leakage. Pull them before winter storage and never mix fresh cells into a partly used set.
Alkaline gets unfairly dismissed in trail-camera guides. For a summer camera on a food plot in Georgia, checked monthly, the cold penalty never applies and the cost difference across a dozen cameras is substantial.
What you must respect is the leak mechanism, and Energizer describes it better than any third party. Its alkaline FAQ states that leakage potential is “significantly increased” by charging, mixing chemistries, “mixing of fresh and used batteries, physical damage, extended exposure to high temperature or deep discharge.” Read that list again with a trail camera in mind: cells run completely flat, in a sealed plastic box on a south-facing tree, then partially replaced on the next visit. That is four of the six conditions at once.
The same FAQ explains why mixing is the worst of them — “as the weakest battery becomes exhausted, it will be force discharged by the stronger batteries to very low or negative voltage levels, which drastically increases the potential for leakage.” Change all eight cells or none.
And do not count on a warranty. Neither Energizer nor Duracell sells a leak-proof guarantee; both offer device-damage warranties that require you to ship the leaking cells and the damaged camera in for assessment. For a camera hanging on public land three hours from home, that is not a meaningful remedy. If a camera is expensive or hard to reach, the lithium premium is cheap insurance.
3. Panasonic eneloop AA — Best Rechargeable, If Your Camera Allows It
Panasonic eneloop AA (NiMH)
- Rated 2,100 charge cycles and 70% charge retained after 10 years of storage — the low-self-discharge design that made eneloop the default NiMH.
- Explicitly recommended by Reconyx: its HyperFire manual "highly recommends" either Energizer Ultimate Lithium or "high-quality NiMH Rechargeable batteries."
- Held 83% of capacity at 5°F in TrailCamPro's cold test — far better than alkaline, well short of lithium.
- Hard blocker: 1.2V per cell. Four cells make 4.8V, below the ~5V cutoff many cameras use. Verify against your camera's manual before buying.
This is the pick that requires you to do one minute of homework, because the industry does not agree with itself.
SPYPOINT’s support site is unambiguous: AAs must be “non-rechargeable, from a premium brand, that are either lithium or alkaline,” and it adds that you should meter them and confirm “they are at least 1.5V.” Stealth Cam’s FAQ is blunter still — “rechargeable batteries are not recommended.” Browning and Moultrie’s published guidance runs the same way.
Reconyx, the most technically documented brand in the category, says the opposite. Its HyperFire manual recommends NiMH alongside lithium, publishes a runtime table for it (20,000–30,000 images against 30,000–40,000 for lithium in a PC900), and gives the camera a Battery Type menu with LITH, NIMH and ALK settings — noting that “if you change battery types be sure to change the Battery Type setting.”
Both positions are correct for their own hardware, and TrailCamPro explains why: it is a cutoff-voltage design decision, not a chemistry law. A camera that cuts off at 5V will call a healthy 4.8V NiMH pack dead. A camera engineered around NiMH will not. So “rechargeables don’t work in trail cams” is too broad, and “just use rechargeables to save money” is too glib. Check your manual, and if it names a cutoff voltage or a battery-type setting, believe it.
That Battery Type setting also solves the most common complaint about rechargeables. A full NiMH pack read against a 1.5V alkaline curve looks nearly empty. Before you conclude your cells are bad, check what chemistry the camera thinks it is reading.
eneloop pro is the higher-capacity sibling at 2,500 mAh, but the trade is steep: roughly 500 cycles against 2,100, and 85% retention after one year against 70% after ten. For a camera you service twice a year, standard eneloop’s decade-long retention is usually worth more than pro’s extra 25% capacity. (And no, eneloop pro has not been discontinued — Panasonic still lists it; a few specialty retailers dropping it is where that rumor comes from.)

The one thing to get right is category. A cartridge replaces your AAs. A 12V box supplements them. Guides that lump these together produce genuinely bad advice, because the answer to “do I still need AAs inside?” is opposite in the two cases.
5. SPYPOINT LIT-10 — Cheapest OEM Pack (and Sometimes Mandatory)

Worth an honesty note here: SPYPOINT hosts customer reviews of the LIT-22 that complain about fast drain and inaccurate charge percentages, and it leaves them up. Manufacturers rarely publish criticism of their own accessories, so when they do, take it at face value. The LIT-10 is the safer of the two, and on the LINK-MICRO-S-LTE you do not have a choice anyway.
6. Stealth Cam 12V Battery Box — Longest Unattended Runs

- Note: Stealth Cam's product page does not state whether AAs should stay in the camera as backup. Every other brand says yes — leave them in.
The $69.99 above is Stealth Cam’s own MSRP; retailers list it well below that, and those numbers move constantly, so treat the manufacturer figure as the ceiling rather than the price you will pay.
A 12V box is heavy, awkward, and hard to hide — everything a trail camera is trying not to be. It is still the right answer in one specific situation: a camera running video or shooting hundreds of frames a night, somewhere you cannot realistically visit before spring.
7. Solar Panels — When the Answer Isn’t Batteries at All
The most useful thing we can tell you about solar packs is that the marketing and the engineering documentation disagree, and the engineering documentation is right.
Moultrie’s product copy for its 3.4W Universal Solar Power Pack says it delivers continuous power “while eliminating the need for AA batteries.” Moultrie’s own support articles for the Edge, Edge Pro, Edge 2, Edge 2 Pro, Edge 3 and Edge 3 Pro all carry the same line: “Pro Tips: If using an external power source it is recommended to use internal batteries as backup.” On the Edge 4 Pro Solar it becomes an instruction rather than a suggestion.
Browning agrees with Moultrie’s engineers rather than Moultrie’s marketing. Its solar pack manual specifies batteries in both the camera and the pack, states the camera’s AAs “act as the backup power source if the solar panel is low on power due to multiple cloudy days, or snow accumulation,” and — the part most buyers miss — makes clear that the panel does not charge the AAs inside the camera. The pack recharges its own internal cells.
SPYPOINT is equally direct on its solar models: the LINK-S, LINK-S-DARK and SOLAR-DARK have an internal battery that the panel charges, “but it still needs to be charged.” On the FORCE-PRO-S, eight AAs can be installed and “the camera will automatically switch to the backup batteries” if the solar charge drops.

What we do not recommend
- USB-C rechargeable “1.5V” Li-ion AA cells. These hold a regulated 1.5V through the entire discharge and then die abruptly, which means your camera cannot compute remaining life and you get no low-battery warning at all. Winterberry Wildlife’s bench data is damning: TenaVolts, Pownergy and EBL cells advertised at 2,775, 3,000 and 3,300 mWh all measured around 2,560 mWh. A 19% advertised spread that collapses to nothing on the bench is a category-level red flag, and the same tester destroyed three cells with a high-current flash draw.
- Mixing chemistries or mixing old with new. Reconyx puts it in bold in its manual: “Do not mix battery types! Damage to the camera can result and your warranty will be voided if you mix battery types.” That is the only explicit warranty-void condition we found anywhere in this category, and it is about mixing — not about choosing rechargeables.
- Buying Browning’s power accessories right now. Every item on Browning’s own power-packs page — the $6.49 AA 8-pack, the $29.99 Solar Camera Battery Pack, the $29.99 LPC lithium packs, the $59.99 Solar Camera Power Pack — showed as unavailable or sold out at the manufacturer when we checked in July 2026. - Off-brand bulk lithium of unknown origin. Moultrie’s own guidance warns that third-party packs may “provide inconsistent power… report battery status inaccurately… cause unexpected restarts or missed check-ins,” and SPYPOINT notes that “off brand batteries may provide unreliable voltage or inconsistent battery life which can affect camera function.” The saving is a few dollars; the cost is a season of blank cards.
How many batteries, and how long will they last?
Reconyx publishes the only manufacturer runtime table we could find, from its HyperFire manual, based on 12 batteries shooting 50% day and 50% night photos at 70°F — described by Reconyx as approximate values:

Two caveats worth stating plainly. This is a 2017 manual covering the HyperFire 1 generation, so treat it as a shape rather than a spec for a current camera. And Reconyx adds its own footnote that high temperatures can cut alkaline and NiMH runtime “by 50% or more” — heat is a second penalty on top of the cold one, and only lithium escapes both.
For video, Winterberry’s numbers are the useful ones: eight lithium AAs hold roughly 40 watt-hours, good for about 13 hours of 1080p recording, against six to seven hours for alkaline, NiMH or Li-ion AA. Video is where battery choice stops being marginal.
Which trail camera battery should you buy?
- Any camera that will sit through a winter: Energizer Ultimate Lithium AA. The cold data is not close.
- Summer cameras you check monthly, on a budget: premium-brand alkaline — but pull the cells before storage and change all of them at once.
- A Reconyx, or any camera whose manual endorses NiMH: Panasonic eneloop, and set the camera’s Battery Type menu to NIMH.
- Tactacam Reveal owners: the REVEAL Lithium Cartridge, $49.99 direct.
- SPYPOINT LINK-MICRO owners: the LIT-10 at $24.99 direct — and on the LINK-MICRO-S-LTE it is the only option.
- A camera running video, or one you cannot revisit until spring: a 12V external box, or a solar pack with AAs left in as backup.

It is that lithium keeps working when nothing else does: 97% of its capacity at 5°F in TrailCamPro’s test against 33% for alkaline, a -40°F rating in Energizer’s own datasheet, and a 25-year shelf life that makes a spare set genuinely spare.
Alkaline is a legitimate budget choice from spring through fall, provided you take Energizer’s leak warning seriously and never mix fresh cells into a used set. Rechargeable NiMH is a real option on cameras engineered for it — Reconyx recommends it outright — and a waste of money on cameras that cut off at 5V, which is most of them. And if a manufacturer sells a tray-replacement pack for your specific camera, like Tactacam’s $49.99 cartridge or SPYPOINT’s $24.99 LIT-10, that is usually the cleanest fix of all, because a camera with no AAs inside is a camera that can never be destroyed by one.
